If sinners be damned, at least let them leap to hell over our dead bodies. And if they perish, let them perish with our arms wrapped about their knees, imploring them to stay. If hell must be filled, let it be filled in the teeth of our exertions, and let not one go unwarned and unprayed for.
– Charles Spurgeon
I read this quote in a recent article about an awkward funeral situation. The author was describing how various people would get up and speak of the man, but there really wasn’t a lot to say.
Finally, a women made a comment how he was “in a better place,” but another woman exclaimed, “No! No, he’s not in a better place! Not if he didn’t know Jesus Christ!”
The author then revealed that second woman had been his wife. He goes on to challenge and chastise the body of Christ, believers, to wake up and get back to the business of sharing the gospel.
America can claim to be founded on Christian principles, but this America is woefully lacking in lifting the name of Jesus.
It is crushing to think a reporter can walk down a city street in a major city and ask people what they know of the Bible.
It appears no one can talk about God’s Word beyond John 3:16 and the “judge not” verse, that most people misquote and don’t even understand the context. Those are the two most popular verses when people are asked, yet Christians absolutely can judge other Christians. In fact, we are instructed in the New Testament to:
“Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted.” – Galatians 6:1
I was taught to pay close attention to how Paul is addressing “brothers and sisters.” The audience is believers and he’s referring to other believers.
Not the lost. They must first know salvation before they would be held accountable for their actions.
There is a clocking ticking everyday toward the return of Christ, and it is time to fill our eyes, ears and minds with the Word of God, so we can block out the noise that distracts our attention – and go. Go tell them more, but with intelligence, knowledge, and speaking the truth in love.
Not with a handful of misunderstood Bible verses that breed only confusion. Our God is not the author of confusion. No wonder Satan uses so many tactics to twist God’s Word into actually convincing people they are doing the right thing.
Who will the people to whom Jesus Christ says:
It surely sounds like He is talking about people who not only claimed to know Christ, but also did works in His name.
In the last eleven months, but specifically in the last few weeks, this has been on my heart and a repeating message in the things I read.
Of course, growing up with a preacher I’ve always heard prophecy taught. What the end times were, Daniel’s metallic man showing the rise and fall of kingdoms from a dream of Nebuchadnezzar, interwoven messages from the Old Testament to the New Testament.
I was taught the absolute truth that there is a heaven and hell – and not everyone is going to heaven. You can’t pretend like this is going to happen for everyone because if you do…
You are lying to them.
You are denying them of the truth and the chance to make the decision. They don’t even understand that being a good person isn’t the qualification.
But, we can help limit that…the lost ones, even those that blatantly reject God.
We are failing our friends and families by not being more lovingly direct about eternity. It’s almost become politically incorrect to mention it!
We live on a planet created by God, breathing air in bodies created by God, and yet, the majority do not acknowledge an accurate version of the God of the universe, the Alpha and Omega, the Great I Am.
How in the world did we lose the compassion, urgency and desperation to tell others about Jesus? And, it isn’t just to scare someone from hell like so many people of the faith have done through the years. It is to bring them Good News and unspeakable joy in the midst of a dying, sinful planet.
It is leading them to the ultimate Love. The love they’ve searched for in people, hobbies, substances, etc., and it is within their grasp in mere seconds of a conversation.
Who is telling them?
I feel like Frodo, as he was surrounded by great kings and warriors, meekly saying, “I will take the ring to Mordor, but I do not know the way.”
I feel that small to try and shout this message – while the noise of the world, arguing over heritage, race, gender, the stock market, borders, a blue dress, high heels, and who hurt their feelings on Twitter. Even in disagreements with some friends.
WE ALL CAME FROM THE SAME PLACE.
There, that’s settled, we were all born into a fallen world. We are born lost and dead in our sins, and only through Jesus can New life, eternal life, be obtained.
For the love of all that is holy – Satan has ruled this world and done it well because we can’t see past the end of our own noses to realize people are dying every day – without Jesus – and will spend eternity in hell.
Shouldn’t that make us weep?
No, it makes us silent.
I read this article and it was…Amazing. Convicting. Challenging. Crushing.
It is a Trumpet Call to believers.
I would love to know what you think.
