…where were You?

I was writing The Breakup Song post when I found a video of another song by Francesca Battistelli that I’d never heard.

This was very strange because I have all of her music, but then I discovered it was in a movie soundtrack only.

I did not read or see The Shack. However, I’ve pondered on the newfound lyrics below since I found them.

This verse also came to mind:

.

Martha then said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died. (John 11:21)

.

The lyrics below are true…I think most of us, at some point or another have asked the Lord, “Why?”

Last night, I finally read the first three chapter of It’s Not Supposed To Be This Way, by Lysa Terkeurst.

In the last chapter of this sneak peek to her new book, she tells the story of being rushed to the hospital in excruciating stomach pain. She begged the Lord to please take away the agony.

But, he didn’t.

For five days, she was in a critical care unit, and the pain pump brought no relief as her abdomen grew more distended. The doctor came in dressed for surgery describing what he had discovered.

There’s really no way to paraphrase, so I’m going to share what she wrote:

.

.

.

I knew this post had been sitting in my ever-growing drafts folder for just this moment.

Of course, in His perfect timing (not sparing any attention to detail), the Lord also let me go to the beach last weekend.

This is where I took the photo below, outside Laguna Beach Christian Retreat because it reminded me of the Footprints poem. I was alone on a “@thegladgame” retreat.

Now, I’ve read the song lyrics and downloaded the advance copy of these three chapters.

This small puzzle of thoughts and notes all come together…

  • the song
  • then the photo
  • and It’s Not Supposed To Be This Way
  • Sometimes it is this way, but we are never alone.
  • What might be hurting us could possibly be saving us.

    Calling and calling, nobody home

It feels like I’m falling alone

Out on an island, SOS on the beach

Watching your plane pass over me

    .

    How could You miss me?

With my hands in the air

    I thought You were listening

    I thought You’d be there!

    .

Where were You? When I had no one to turn to – Where were You? When my worst fears were coming true?

Where were You? I thought you’d come to my rescue Where were You?

    .

One set of footprints, on the path I’d been on

But You say You’ve been here all along, oh

If you really loved me, like nobody else

Why was I walking through hell

    .

    How could You miss me?

With my hands in the air

    I thought You were listening

Oh, I thought You’d be there!

    .

    Where were You?

When I had no one to turn to

    Where were You?

When my worst fears were coming true

    Where were You?

    .

When my prayers bounced off the ceiling

I was facing down my demons

When my legs gave up beneath me…And I fell into Your arms

    .

    Where were You?

When I had no one to turn to

    You carried me through

On your shoulders, black and blue

    .

    I never knew…

The footprints in the sand were You.

One set of footprints, on a path I’d been on…

Now I know they were Yours all along.
